Overall, Buffet's point is the tax deductions 2012 code needs to be reformed. And he's right. Special deductions from income prior to paying taxes have gone overboard. Our system is wacky and has been for a long time. Did you know there is a negative correlation 0.18 between the top marginal tax rate and taxes collected as a percent of GDP going back to 1946? Further, the predictive value of tax rates for tax revenue as measured by r-squared is 0.03? The code is filled with deductions from income Read more [...]
Hi Sundar, This is not a new breakthrough. It has been around since the beginning of time. It was ordained by the One who created us, who knows us better than we know ourselves. Yes, really, it is not that complicated, so please call me a simpleton. Those with childhood depression are in despair, holding little hope and experiencing little joy. Knowing Jesus and following the way that He showed us as explained in the Bible gives us a lively hope and an abundance of joy. It is the complete opposite Read more [...]
There could be advantages to the Galveston Pllan, but if it is a true retirement plan, it is comparing apples and oranges to talk about it as an alternative to Social Security, an insurance program. At the time of divorce advice for men, a spouse having a retirement plan must put it on the table as a community asset to be divided in some manner. A spouse having Social Security benefits accrued during a marriage would never have to divide these. Divorce clients in my mediations never realize the difference Read more [...]
Edward, each of us has the responsibility to develop your communication skills skills and talents where we can serve actual needs of our fellow man. You describe people who are unqualified to teach, so your solution is to use union extortion to force taxpayers to give them welfare. Why not encourage these people to look around.....to use their imagination to develop skills which can be used to honestly serve the needs of their neighbors. Why convert these people into professional leeches? Encourage Read more [...]
Normal people know that when they emigrate to a foreign country they have to make concessions to accommodate the existing culture and laws of the new country, if they want to be accepted. It seems that this particular culture/religion/political culture group/whatever the heck it is you want to call it has been the most reluctant to change or compromise when assimilating into an existing and established culture. Good for France! I hope other countries follow suit, rather than support the archaic rituals Read more [...]
More wise words about life from a desparate, small and cowardly man who would say anything to save his presidency and his reelection. I would certainly not want to be a on a sinking ship with the likes of him. He would willingly trample my family in a rush to find a spot in a life boat for himself. You can learn a lot from the words and deeds a man uses when he perceives that his back is to the wall. One more thing...the repubs missed a chance as well when they let his comment on social security Read more [...]
I've had mixed results in the past with background music - there are times when it energizes and focuses me (especially when silence results in my mind wandering), and there are times when I require quiet or white noise to really hone in on in on what I'm trying to do. That said, music as a mnemonic device is almost certainly a positive as anyone who grew up watching School House Rock on Saturday mornings in the 70s and 80s will tell you. I can't recite the preamble to the U.S. Constitution without Read more [...]
@Michelle, the Nation was made great in the postwar period of prosperity by having the only intact industrial base with which to rebuild the rest of the world, not high marginal rates. A relative pittance was collected at those rates. People earning at the levels that would hit those brackets can choose not to earn income, then and now. Pay more tax brackets 2012es if you wish; you currently and always have been free to do so. You're throwing money into a gaping maw, a rathole, which will not build Read more [...]
I'm not sure if the South Koreans use a system that has a cabinet appointed by their president, or whether the cabinet is formed by parliament members, as in Britain, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, and a number of other countries. In those latter countries, the minister of defense would indeed be a politician. Even in the US, cabinet officials are more often than not professional politicians who have run for office numerous times, rather than career civil servants or people who rose to the top Read more [...]
The writer of this article had better stay in India, and definitely never go to Pakistan. His discernment, honesty and courage are a threat to the Islamist absolutists. He will be accused of syncretism, apostasy, treason, defaming the country's proudest national institution (the army) and 'insulting the dignity of the state' or some other such nonsense. His very reasonableness would make him an immediate target passionate for death, because 'the best lack all conviction while the worst are full of Read more [...]
